Social Media is the new version of word of mouth advertising.
And this has an impact on small business owners! Especially for those of us blogging.
Bloggers are looking for followers, subscribers—folks to share their words of wisdom or humor or whatever their topic of choice may be. And you can easily help!
Think of sharing a blog as loaning your favorite book to a friend. You’ve loved this book and want someone else to experience it, get addicted to the series, fall in love with the author. If someone reads a book they think I’ll like, a writer whose style will appeal, they tell me. Then I tell someone about it. Someone might have loaned me the first Michael Connelly book I ever read. I’ve since bought every one he’s written. I’m a loyal fan and tell anyone who I think will hear me say it.
So it Goes With Blogging
When it hits Facebook and you Share it, then everyone connected to you sees it.
When you comment on the blog on the writer’s site, it increases the blog’s visibility and page ranking in searches.
If it’s a business related blog and you share it on LinkedIn, your connections see it, which spreads it more.
If you’re on Instagram take a moment to hashtag the topic and really send that blog out into the stratosphere.
Building an audience is a slow process, but it works. Good writing combined with Social Media Sharing do the trick for us bloggers. Ready to give a hand? Thanks for all of us!
Thanks for pressing a Social Media button and sending me out into the world! Every time you share, it helps a writer get the exposure we need!

If you’re a fellow blogger, read this to learn What Not to do in WordPress! Oh yes, I’ve made mistakes.

It is a very slow process, but the good thing is that it works.
One of the most important things you said is that it is a slow process. Building an audience, whether for a blog or a social media network, happens a little bit at a time.
Ken, you are a good example of a blogger being reliable–your content, the frequency, the grammar, etc. I always look forward to them popping into my inbox–you’re building a good audience!
I wish I read this before I started my blog! It took a long time for me to figure out all those connections and how they worked. But I think if I had realized all thats involved with maintaining a blog, I may not have taken the step to start one.
I’m sure that I would have been scared off from blogging, Pamela, if I had realized everything it would evolve into. On the other hand, it’s a mental challenge and that has been a good thing. It also forces me to learn technological things that I probably wouldn’t bother with–and that is good indeed!
What a nifty idea, that it is like loaning a book to a friend. I’d never thought of it that way but it is perfect!
I have loaned you to more than a few people, Beth (although that looks really, really funny in writing!).
Excellent points! Sharing is always a wonderful way to support each other and I do it every chance I get. I am so grateful for the sharing and comments. Still, and maybe it’s because the way I nudge people to reach a little further than they are comfortable, the most heartfelt comments come to me via email. In fact more than a few have brought me to tears. So, yea, share away because there’s so much more to this blogging thing than most people realize and it’s really nice to know that people are paying attention.
I have a wonderful handful of friends who aren’t comfortable with public comments, but send me those personal emails. I love that they take the time to do it–and you’re right, Marquita, sometimes they make me cry!
I think we take sharing for granted now with social media, but you still have to push that button! Also I really liked your point about adding a hashtag. I’m just learning about how powerful that can be. Great points!
I’m just learning about the power of a hashtag, too, Meredith! That comes to me via BHB Sabrina. She’s so good about sharing things that way. I think my Hawaii post wound up with a #Hawaii and now it’s in a long train about the subject!
Great points about sharing. It is much like letting friends know about a book or movie you liked. It’s also fun to find out that a social share you’ve done about someone else’ blog is being re-shared by your followers or winds up in a curated newsletter.
Lenie has told me that even though she isn’t on Facebook, because I share her posts there, she has people comment/contact. How fun is that? I never thought about the winding up in a curated newsletter, Donna. That’d be great!
Bloggers should be supportive of one another. Sharing takes just seconds, encourages the blogger and increases their viewers.
You have shared a number of my blogs and I am appreciative of this.
I think the BHB group is comprised of a lot of sharers, Phoenicia. And the longer I’m with the group, the stronger the sharing has become. It’s fun!
Rose, I know that you really walk the talk – I don’t think there is another BHB member that is as good at sharing as you are. I always appreciate so much when you share mine.
Aw shucks, Lenie, you are so sweet to say that!
Great point. I love that you compared sharing posts to lending a book. I didn’t think of that before but it is true. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing, Sabrina–our blogs are just as lendable/give-able as books! We just need more folks to share that way!
Shared!!!
Done!!! Small businesses must stick together!
You’re right, Dawn! I tell anyone out your direction to give you a ring!
Amen! Everyone share away. 🙂
I love when I can share a BHB post with the perfect person or group. It’s exciting!
I am not on social media much any more, but will spread the word when I can.
Thank you, Jim!
Lessons I learned in kindergarten… on crack:) Love to share!
Oh Jacquie…need I say more?
I will try to help in any way I can!
